Kiern nodded thoughtfully as the elf spoke her thoughts on the matter, but he spoke when she mentioned the black moon. "What is the black moon?" he asked simply.
"This?" He asked, and gestured slightly with the blade, "got it off of one of those bungling burglars back there. The noisy one that tried to take my head off."
As he examined the sword more closely he began to note it's unusually good quality for a highwayman. Must have murdered a rich man in his sleep along the road to acquire a sword this good, or else he must have been far more than a common highwayman, He thought to himself.
"Now you've piqued my curiousity," he said with wry smile. "How did that fellow get a sword like this?" After a moment he continued, "I suppose I could find out, if we really wanted to know."

A shocked expression stole over her face as he asked. Blinking a few times, she remembered that he wasn't an elf. "The black moon...it's only reffered like that by the Elves, mainly because its the only time that the moon turns a dull, dark color...kind of like how the harvest moon is orange and the blue moon....blue. It's the time when Darke powers are at the highest point...and it only occurs once every 300 years or so...so he doesn't have much longer to wait."
"got it off of one of those bungling burglars back there. The noisy one that tried to take my head off."
"They were all noisy." She retorted.
"I suppose I could find out, if we really wanted to know."
Noel cast a wary and slightly unnerved glance. "How exactly would you do that? I only know one way and all of the weapons previous owners must be dead." Mi gave a muffled chirp of resignment, and startled Noel. "Oh! Right." With a flick of her wrist, Mi was unfrozen and fluffed her feathers out gratefully. She then settled into a reluctant doze, still on Noel's shoulder.

"Oh, that's what you call the black moon. That's just a title I'd never heard it called. So one is approaching us you say? Hmm, that ought to be an interesting experience, this plight aside anyway."
"How exactly would you do that? I only know one way and all of the weapons previous owners must be dead."
A slight smile crept across his face. A slight smile of..what? Pride? Pride that perhaps he could do something that the elf couldn't? Perhaps so. "I was in direct contact with his spirit when I tore it from his body, & I didn't toss it into Oblivion when I let it go, I merely left it there trapped out of it's body. I made a ghost, if you will. I could go back to the clearing and cast out my spirit to feel for the Trace. Once found all I have to do is question the spirit of the man that held this sword," he finished, lifting up the sword for emphasis. "Unless that's too 'reckless' a thing to do, in your opinion."
"Anyhow, what interests you in this sword anyway?"

"Well, first, it interests me because it looks identical to the one my brother took with him when he went to war. And I want to know if that truly is the one, because if it is, he will have surely cast some spell to help me find him in it." And recalling his way of finding out, her stomach turned a little. "Well, it is certainly not by any means an elvish thing to do, considering it is necromancy, but, since you are no elf, I suppose if you are up to the task, I would like to find out."
Gracefully standing up, she held out her hand towards Keirn. "Before we set out to do this, I just want to make clear your intentions. Do you wish to continue this journey with me to the end to help me find my brother? And if so, I want to make an Unbreakable Vow."

"An Unbreakable Vow?" Kiern asked warily. "What exactly does such a thing entail? & why would you require of it me?"
He did not like the sound of an oath made with an elf, such things were usually magically binding, and the elves tended to hold little love and less mercy on human kind.
"Anyway, if questioning the spirit makes you too uncomfortable and you think there is some magic on this blade, why not just skip chatting with the dead and check the blade for yourself?" He said, turning the sword toward her hilt first.

"Because an Unbreakable Vow is, well, unbreakable. I don't want to take the chance of either somebody taking the information from you, or you spilling it on your own accord. If I'm going to trust you, you need to trust me. The Unbreakable Vow...basically, if you willingly break it, you will die before you can break it. But if somebody tries to take the information from you, they will die. Understand?"
She looked longingly at the blade. "I wish it was that simple. You cannot just simply reach into the blade and get its secrets out. Not even the mightest of Elves can do such things, even though some boast of it. God's gave some blades the power to hold secrets, and only Gods can take the secrets out, even if it is a lowly human who puts the secret in. The holder of the blade at the time must be killed in order to gain control over the blade, and only then can you even hope to get any kind of answer...It is very complex and a little odd, I admit, but that is the only way I know. Granted I have not lived amongst my kind for thou-....for years."

"That's the crux of the Unbreakable Vow, is it? Hmm...well, if death is the worst that could happen, then why not. How do you..'cast' it?"
Shifting the hilt back into his own hands, Kiern asked, "Well, I did kill the one in possesion of the sword, so then shouldn't I be able to unlock any secrets in it, or is this elf magic that only another elf may unlock?"

"No. Any human with the right knowledge and power can unlock it, which in a way is bad, but for current circumstances, its alright. The person who is in current possession of the sword or item is the only one who can unlock it. Meaning," She gave a small chuckle of laughter, "if I wanted to unlock it, I would have to kill you first." She smiled to make sure he knew she was joking.
"Well, to cast it, we hold hands like this," She grabbed his right hand with her own right hand, "And just repeat after me. I Nerismorel Silversgleaming, make an unbreakable oath to you, Keirn Valdeimir that no matter what happens on our quest for my brother, that I will protect you and give no secrets of yours to anybody who may ask."

He laughed at her jest, & twirled the sword hilt back to his own hand and put the point into the ground.
He nearly drew back a step when she snatched his hand up from the sword, because he could feel the magical binding building the moment she touched him. Despite feeling the magic, he couldn't resist, and with a mischievious look in his eye he repeated, "I, Nerismorel Silvergleaming...

The moment the last syllable of her name left his lips, the sword shot a great bolt of magic coursing through him, enough to bring any man to his knees in pain, but not enough to kill. "Don't be a git! The sword knows who you are, where you've been, and what you've done from the moment you were conceived in your mothers womb! Don't fool with this magic or your fate will end here!" The voice that escaped Noel's lips was not her own, but a low and forboding gutteral voice.
Noel's eyes looked like those of a blind woman, and her body stood stone still and her hand was glued to the sword and Kierns hand.

Struggling back to his feet with a grimace, blue and black tattoos both flashing across his face swiftly, he obediently repeated after Noel. Properly this time, with no grin.
God's balls! @$%#^&!. @$%#^&*-ing elven magic has no room for humor, his mind seethed in rage.
"So," he began hesitantly as she released his hand, "it's done?"

Noel let out a sharp gasp of air. "Yes...It is finished." Came the broken response. That had taken a great deal more energy than she had anticipated, and frankly, she didn't like underestimating anything. "Now we are bound together by our secrets. Neither of us can break this without dire consequences." Her face regained it's previous composure, and she handed the sword back to Kiern.
"Did, something happen?" She asked, seeing the disgruntled expression that was mixed with a thin veil of anger on his face. She had no way of knowing what had transpired, she only knew that the sword had reached into her mind, and then she knew nothing until all was finished. Mi sat shivering on her shoulder, small black eyes wide with silent terror. Something really must have frightened Mi for her to be acting this way. If Kiern didn't tell her what had happened, Noel supposed she could get it out of Mi sooner or later.
